Whether you wear them with a matching hat, a house scarf, or on their own, these mittens will keep your hands toasty and warm all winter. The zigzag cable, bordered by delicate 2-stitch ropes, is fun and deceptively easy to knit, while the mitten styling adds a bit of a challenge. But don't be intimidated – as long as you can knit on double-pointed needles, you can definitely make these. They would make a terrific winter birthday present for the Hermione in your life, or keep them for yourself. We won't tell!

It's also easy to customize the pattern for a perfect fit. If you're knitting for especially large or small hands, you may want to shift your needle size up or down one size, respectively. And if you like a particularly snug cuff, try working it on US 5 needles, then going up to a 6 for the body of the mitten.

Techniques required for this pattern are: knitting, purling, circular knitting (including double-pointed needles), cables, increases (k1b), decreases (k2tog, p2tog, ssk), and picking up stitches.

This pattern uses 1 skein of Cascade 220 (100% worsted-weight wool – 100g/220yds per skein) in shade #9404 (ruby). The finished mittens are sized during blocking and can fit nearly any size women's hand. Gauge for the pattern is 5.5 sts/7.75 rows per inch on US 6 (4mm) needles or size needed to get gauge.
