quick question

I owe a real entry; after working for months on the same two projects, I finished both within a week of each other, so there's pictures to be taken and new ideas to be discussed (summer tops? socks? lacy things to wear to weddings?). I also managed a decent yarn haul in NOLA and a quick trip to Philly the following weekend, which means yarn porn. But right now, I have a plain ol' question:

Does anyone have experience with yardage meters like this one on Knitpicks? I'd love to have an easier way to count yardage and split balls in half than folding yarn back on itself. OTOH, if it's a total waste of money, I'd just as soon spend that $50 on actual yarn. :)
