I launched atypically.knit in July 2003 as an upgrade, of sorts, to my previous endeavours into the world of Harry Potter costuming. Instead of offering solely scarves and scarf patterns, I now plan to host a range of resources for fans who prefer a more hands-on approach to costume creation. Sweaters, scarves, socks - in time, we'll offer all that and more.

about the webmistress
Lauren Kent is a twenty-three year old senior at New York University in New York, NY. She learned the basics of knitting from her mother and grandmother when she was eight (give or take); the rest she taught herself from books once she was tall enough to get them off the bookshelf. She fell in love with the Harry Potter series in August 2001 when a friend bought her a copy of Sorcerer's Stone. The rest, as they say, is history.

a bit of philosophy
I started knitting Hogwarts scarves for friends and friends' friends almost as soon as the film adaptation of Sorcerer's Stone came out in 2001. I've learned a lot in my 3.5 years of knitting for other people, but as you might imagine, making 70 of the same project, one after another, can begin to lose its original charm.

As the kids in the Harry Potter films grow up, so do their wardrobes. Where the trio once wore plain storebought outfits, they've now begun to develop personal styles that reflect current fashion - Hermione's trendy hoodies, Ron's quirky hand-me-downs. There is a definite demand for patterns that duplicate these garments, from both diehard costumers and casual fans looking for a cute new project.

So, we at atypically.knit have decided to move our focus away from readymade knits to pattern development. Hogwarts scarves are easy to find online and off. Red hats with exactly the right cable? That's a bit tougher.

frequently asked questions
Just a few to start with...

Will you knit me a Hogwarts scarf?
In short, no.

Do you do commission work?
With the exception of Hogwarts scarves, and as long as it's Harry Potter-related, yes. Right now there's enough demand for Potter-specific knitting that we've decided to limit ourselves until it diminishes. This includes Hogwarts-esque scarves in non-Hogwarts colors as well. None of this is to say that we don't endorse general commission knitting - we do - but there are millions of knitters in the world, and many of them are more than happy to take commissions.

Can you knit a scarf with yarn I provide?
Unfortunately, no. There are just too many potential issues for it to be feasible. Sorry.

When will uniform sweaters be available?
Actually, as of present we're not planning to offer readymade sweaters, just a pattern to knit your own. We would love to be able to, but the sweaters would be prohibitively expensive, probably in the neighborhood of $200-$250. We recommend trying Hobbie's House or eBay, or adding piping to a plain grey sweater.
